REVIEWS:

«ThinFilms is the project of UK electronic musician Dan McRae.  It's a pulsing, addictive style he calls "Cinematic Electronica". Hard edged, it's a sleek and stripped down sound that transports the mind and moves the body.  Synths and electronic percussion create atmospheres of a glistening world of snow and ice.

Track 1, the chase is on with "The Hunt",  breakneck electronic drums, with ascending and descending synth lines.  Next is "Huskies", heavy, stomping beats with synth and bell tone counterpoints on top.  A very strong track.  "Dial M For Eskimo" follows, with machinegun melodies and a delicious off-kilter rhythm changing in to a sprint. The fourth track,"Polar Bear" has contemplative synth chords in a brief majestic hymn.  Crunchy hip hop beats form the bedrock of "The Awakening", as ghostly winds howl, giving way to chiming sounds and morphing beats.  Track 6,"Lure Of Time String Theory Remix" has a swaggering beat with a blooping synth melody and icy waves of effects. It's a very tasty track!  Mellow tones of wonderment are the basis for the brief "Inuit In NY". A jagged, jazzy fusion rhythm dances with electrobass  under stormy melodic fragments in the awesome "Endless Days".  Next is "Sweet Electric", where plucky melodies alternate between loud and soft dynamics. The tenth track, "Morning Valley" opens with storm effects and a lonely piano melody giving way to the sounds of an electronic orchestra, with birds chirping in the background, ending with another storm.  Acoustic guitar and string sounds ride a strutting, jazzy beat in the final track, "Lure Of Time Alpha Mix", hooking up with some nice electric piano.  A smooth and satisfying conclusion to a rollicking good time.

This is a great disc that takes the listener on a wonderful adventure with a variety of beats, sounds and textures. The production and flow keep the listener very involved. There are discussions of other ventures and multimedia tours. This is a project to keep your eye on!
- Luís Marta in Quark! Quark! - AWAITING TRANSLATION

(7/10) - Pedro Rios in Y (Público) - AWAITING TRANSLATION

QUOTES:

«Thin Recordings aka the brain child of Thin Films very own Dan McRae are proud to present its highly anticipated debut release, appropriately entitled 'Eskimo', composed as an LP it is 46 minutes long. Having tinkered with the record’s infrastructure for over a year now, McRae has honed his unique brand of cinematic electronica to near perfection. Although listeners may have picked up on the glacial themes through his input on Lien’s ‘Matica’, no one could have foreseen the attention to detail which has been implemented here. Tracks like ‘The Awakening’ and ‘Huskies’ are pure inuit methamphetamine, offset beautifully by delicate pieces like ‘Morning Valley’ which could almost be untampered polar field recordings. Rarely has a record been so consistently synaesthetic as this. McRae’s debut is as relentless as it is mesmerizing.» - Chaos Unlimited

«Dan McRae's solo project Thin Films is set to join the ranks of ambient artists (Matmos, Múm, Sigur Rós and more recently, Einoma) that take inspiration from vast expanses of frozen tundra and arctic landscapes - whatever floats your boat, I suppose - and strive to document them through soundscapes that are equally barren» - XvScott / dot:alt magazine

«Eskimo possesses a density that is often similar to Massive Attack's on 100th Window» - XvScott / dot:alt magazine

«An adventure in electronica of cinematic proportions (...) Eskimo shimmers and crumbles, soars and breaths, blending an ethereal concoction of hip hop breaks with filmic strings, delicate keys and finely crafted melodies» - Aidan Cassidy / 'do something pretty' magazine.
