«David Vélez is better known as Lezrod and has released a couple of releases under this moniker on both Zymogen and Test Tube. His latest work Genki consists of two parts which are simultaneously and separately released on both Zymogen and Test Tube as a collaboration between both netlabels.
The title Genki is derived from the contraction of two words:

- Gene, which answers.com describes as "hereditary unit consisting of a sequence of DNA that occupies a specific location on a chromosome and determines a particular characteristic in an organism";
- Ki, which refers to the Kanji symbol for "spirit, mood". In a wider sense it also stands for the concept originating from traditional Chinese culture "to be part of every living thing that exists, as a kind of 'life force' or 'spiritual energy'."

Concerning new musical achievements Genki Vol. I and II are not only a great step forward compared to earlier releases, both volumes also mark a transition to a new period in David Vélez' life, from quitting his job in Bogota, Colombia for working full time on his music to moving to Queens, NY (in the northeast of the United States) with a new job in an unfamiliar environment and a different culture.
Genki Vol. II, the release on Test Tube, is characterised by a level of abstraction unrivalled in former releases of his. Voices, feedback and machine noise happily unite with patches of airy chords to a colourful texture of sonic art. Like a common thread in a novel, there is a logical progression in this scenery, nothing is left without a cause. No doubt that David Vélez has considerably broadened his music vocabulary and reached an impressive level of proficiency.»

Reviews:

«Anyone who listens regularly to electronic music is aware of the many promising young sound artists coming out of Central and South America. Free Albums Galore has already featured artists from Mexico and Chile. Columbian David Vélez, who records under Lezrod, is just the newest of these experimental musicians who focus on releasing through the internet. Here are six albums by Lezrod from the Zymogen and Test Tube netlabels. (...)
Lastly Zymogen and Test Tube teams up for Lezrod’s two part composition titled Genki. The two volume work is the composer’s latest and most ambitious. There are a lot of layers in these mainly ambient tracks and all point toward an young artist still finding his voice in the world. I expect we will be hearing much more from David Vélez. Volume 1 is from Zymogen (192kbps MP3) and Volume 2 is available from Test Tube (224kbps MP3. All six albums can be downloaded as separate tracks or full album zip.»

«Colombian artist David Vélez aka Lezrod has released two extraordinary albums on Italian netlabel Zymogen and on Portugese netlabel Test Tube respectively. As you can guess Genki was released as a collaboration between both labels which makes sense in at least two ways: 1) Lezrod has released on both labels before and 2) 101 minutes of music is simply too much for a single release.
Musically David Vélez stays true to his earlier releases and makes heavy use of field recordings resulting in very abstract and experimental tracks. However I am always surprised to discover some nice melodic elements which help listeners to follow Vélez’ sound explorations. Actually I managed to listen to both volumes in one session. Also Vélez doesn’t force listeners to pay attention to every micro sound within his tracks. There is time to reflect on sounds; don’t worry about missing a sound or even pattern, you will discover them the next time. These two releases are big, really big. Lezrod’s best tracks so far.»
