«on_14 is the new encarnation of japanese Aogu Yoshida, the man who brought us (as AO) 'Endlessly, Sweetly and Slightly', a beautiful two-piece work for guitar drones. Aogu is also the man behind the excellent ON-LI Netlabel (worthy of a visit), where he has more than a couple of releases. So, what has changed between AO and on_14, musically? Very little, actually. The trademark guitar drones are present, the sad and meditative imagery is also present. Even half of the tracks are close to the 10 minute mark. But there's also something new.
'Forest' compiles three new studio recordings and a live one, called 'Taste'. I don't know were or why Aogu recorded this live track and chose to include it here. But, interesting enough, it fits perfectly. 'Taste (live)' and 'After Summer' - the opening and closing pieces of this new EP - are very similar in form and much in the same line structurally as the previous test tube release: long and wavy drones ondulating in the cosmos, freely, in solitude. But there's also a slight difference, because this time Aogu didn't let them loose enough to reach distortion levels.
With the 'Forest' pieces, we also find resemblances to 'Endlessly, Sweetly and Slightly', not structurally but musically: The rough edges of the drones and the 'on the red' distortion pedal effects are pretty much the same. But the similarities end here. Aogu added another layer to the drone mass, a discrete drum beat and chimes. This percussion layer is present in part one and two of 'Forest' at all times, 'though it gets muffled up here and then by the sharp drones. But it's an interesting addition, as it draws the listener away from the noise pool... and back again, repeatedly. And then it comes 'After Summer', which is the perfect ending for this awesome work.»

«Detrás del pseudónimo On_14 se nos presenta el músico japonés Aogu Yoshida, que con anterioridad ha sacado discos bajo el nombre de AO (concretamente dos, ambos en 2005) y es un elemento activo del inquieto universo netlabel. “Forest”, editado por la excepcional netlabel portuguesa Test Tube en diciembre de 2006, es ya el cuarto disco de On_14 que ve la luz y el último hasta el momento.
Lo que encontramos entre su minutaje es un hermoso y breve trabajo de drone-ambient de guitarras, austero, minimalista, despojado de artificios y acompañamientos, que fluctúa sutilmente a modo de pequeñas idas y venidas, de la calma a la intensidad, y de ésta nuevamente al punto de partida. “Taste”, el corte (grabado en directo) que abre el Ep, dibuja silenciosamente tenues paisajes sonoros, que con su ligera cadencia trasladan al oyente a un oscuro lugar en calma, en el que sólo existe el relajante pero infatigable vaivén del oleaje, generado por el zumbido de una guitarra que bien podría ser el majestuoso rugido de las mareas al morder la arena.
El núcleo central del disco se divide en dos partes de apenas diez minutos cada una. “Forest (Part One)” y “Forest (Part Two)” son continuación de la tónica iniciada al principio, pero despliegan una mayor intensidad, mayor amplitud y luminosidad que la mostrada en “Taste”. Son piezas más espaciosas, de más cuerpo, ambas recorridas de inicio a fin por un hilo de frágil percusión que funciona en un segundo plano. La sensación de armonía y plenitud se desarrolla sin corsés ni ataduras, extendiéndose sin prisas en el tiempo y en el espacio, para luego dejar paso a un gradual descenso en la saturación y en esa cálida sensación de calma. Se abre entonces “After Summer”, el excepcional tema cierre, que funciona a lo largo de cinco minutos como un delicado paseo de ambient preciosista, con pasajes amplios, relajados, parsimoniosos y de una sensación triste y melancólica de brillante ejecución que dan por terminado un fabuloso y espiritual viaje.
Aogu Yoshida parece desenvolverse perfectamente facturando atmósferas relajadas, tranquilas y a menudo luminosas a base de drones de guitarra y muy pocos efectos, sin apenas hacer uso de percusión –de forma muy liviana cuando ésta entra en escena- y controlando minuciosamente los incrementos en la distorsión. “Forest” te hace partícipe de un viaje aparentemente en repetición en el que el desarrollo global hace casi imperceptibles las variaciones que tienen lugar, y que sin apenas percatarte te han llevado de anchos espacios abiertos a oscuras líneas costeras, sin sobresaltos ni cambios quebrados. Un disco definitivamente homogéneo pero agradable, meláncolico pero muy vivo. Una excusa, en suma, para dejarse secuestrar durante treinta minutos y caer en la cuenta al quitarse los auriculares de que tanto On_14 como Test Tube son dos entidades que merece la pena rastrear.»

«Nouvel essai d'Aogu Yoshida (AO) sur Test Tube, cette fois encore sous un nom assez curieux. N'empêche que la musique du Japonais continue de fonctionner à merveille. Ambiance relaxante à base d'ondes émises par des guitares. Le premier morceau, Taste, un live, donne le ton. Suivent deux parties du titre Forest, rappelant avec un certain brio certaines productions du groupe Slowdive. Cette Noisy-ambiant fait le bonheur de mes tympans, en tout cas.»
